“Signing up for the Jersey to France swim was my biggest swimming challenge to date.  I had come back to swimming 7 years ago after being out of the water for 26 years & would almost be 50 years old when my swim window opened.

I very much wanted to give myself the best chance to get across.  So I looked at getting help to ‘control’ the variables I could.  The sea conditions & weather are out of my control so being the best I could be meant a higher chance of me succeeding.

I had followed Amy on Instagram & reached out to her as I’m a ‘lists person’ & need a structured training plan to feel I’m working at my best.

Working with Amy was easy from the start.  Every day I knew what was expected from me.  I would rock up to the pool with my Sets printed out & get to work.

A ‘Big Thank You’ to Amy.  I never thought I would have done so well & probably wouldn’t have without her on my little team.”

  • Dani C.

“I asked Amy to help me with my second attempt of Windermere One Way. Amy set me a rounded training plan and I enjoyed the accountability of our check in chats - she helped with nutrition, S&C and recovery.

I saw noticeable increases in form and pace over distance, so rather than just surviving the distance, I felt thoroughly prepared and was delighted to smash my expected swim time (5:39) too!

I highly recommend Amy as she has a wealth of experience and I love her scientific approach.”

  • Garion G.

"As someone who had a dream of swimming the ‘triple Crown’ of the English lakes but no real comprehension of the actual effort involved, I made sure to reach out to the best possible resource of experience and guidance I could find.

My background saw some endurance sport but swimming distance was relatively new. Speaking with Amy during our first call gave me complete confidence that my dream can and will be achieved, if I worked through the sessions and plan provided. I chose the 1-2-1 plan from Amy as I could see the massive benefit of having that personalised care and attention not found elsewhere. Amy was able to gently introduce me to [the structured plan] and work me up gradually to some pretty tasty working sets and sessions!

Another side of a 1-2-1 plan that isn't mentioned all that often, is the emotional support. Of course one moves through rough patches, whether that be in training or in my case jet lag.... however Amy showed why she is so good at what she does. A simple text with my immediate concerns was met with a direct and perfect solution with the encouragement needed to keep me up and fighting.

I can now say I have swam the three longest lakes in England! But none of it would be possible without the help of Amy so THANK YOU!"

  • Gill Castle, First person to swim the English Channel with a Stoma. 13hrs 53mins

"My training plan & coach is Amy, and I cannot emphasise how much of a difference it has made to my confidence and enjoyment of my trianing, having her write out each swim session, give me feedback on my Garmin results and advise me on what I should be doing.

For 2 years I felt really lost, I just didn't have the confidence to feel like I was doing the right things to get me across to France, but now I know I just need to follow the plan! It means I can just throw myself into my swims and enjoy it."

  • Patrik Eveborn, English Channel 13hrs 32mins

"Thank you so much for taking the time to do my plan. It really saved my swim. I believe this is the right move for people like myself that aren't surrounded with an open water community locally. It's so nice to reach out to an experienced expert!"

  • Dani Cameron. Jersey to France 7hrs 48mins , English Channel 12hrs 22mins, Loch Ness 15hrs 50mins

"I cannot thank you enough for what you have done for me. Your plan has made me a very different swimmer to the one who did their relay in 2020. I can follow your plans easily & I love knowing what I am doing week to week."

FAQs

Still have questions that need answering? See the answers to some of the top common questions below. If you still can’t find the answer you were looking for, contact Amy and she will get back to you in no time.

  • Amy has been coaching swimmers virtually since 2021, and has been writing her own training plans for open water swimming since 2016.

  • She relies on an initial introductory call and questionnaire to gauge your skill and fitness levels, so it is vitally important that you are transparent about your current levels.

  • Unless an athlete specifically requests something different, Amy utilises a set number of principals in her coaching that will allow her to personalise the best training plan for you.

Training plans will be based on mesocycles throughout the year (blocks of 3-6 months focused on different aims). Each mesocycle will be broken down into macrocycles (periods of 3-4 weeks where you’re working hard, broken up with rest or recovery weeks). Your endurance and long swim distances will build up slowly to prevent injury, and your plan will have speed training in (unless you have requested a Milestone Training Plan) to improve your pacing.

These are all tried and tested methods, with a solid and proven scientific backing. They won’t let you down!

  • For the Training Plan packages, you will have an initial call of 30-60 mins, and then once Amy has delivered the plan to you, you will have up to 7 days to ask any clarifying questions. After that you can book onto a power hour call to ask any follow up questions you may have.

On the 1-2-1 coaching plan, you will have access to a WhatsApp chat where you can ask Amy questions at any time, in addition to the monthly catch up call of up to 60 mins.

  • To minimise the risk of swimming in open water, it is advisable to have a brightly coloured hat and a tow float.

To train effectively for an open water swim event or race, Amy recommends her athletes have at least a pull buoy, a kick board and a set of hand paddles.

  • Yes! Amy has coached swimmers who swim ‘skins’, as well as swimmers who compete in full or no-sleeves wetsuits.

  • As Amy is not a qualified personal trainer, she does not make recommendations for what her athletes should do in the gym. She does recommend in her training plans how often you should be strength training, and also what muscles to focus on (or what to say to a personal trainer to get the best routine to complement your training).

Amy does recommend rotator cuff exercises as injury prevention alongside her plans. These are available as a video guide as part of the plan.

  • Amy does not provide video analysis at the moment. Swimming is an intensely technique-based sport, and pursuing longer distances can make a swimmer very prone to injury. She always recommends that her athletes and anyone taking on one of her training plans books a visit to a video analysis or technique expert.

Amy can recommend video analysis experts around the U.K., and although she is more than happy to take a look at any videos her 1-2-1 coached athletes send her, it is always better to go to a professional.

  • Amy’s plans incorporate regular test sets so that you can assess your progress and goals. She includes notes and comments in the plans so that you are able to understand and interpret your own results and efforts as you make your way through the plan.

  • She only provides feeding or nutrition plans for her 1-2-1 coached athletes. Feeding and nutrition for a swim is a very individual and delicate balance, and it can be very tricky to get right. She is happy to work with her 1-2-1 athletes to experiment with different feeding plans, as you have the time available to discover what works best for each individual swimmer.
